How We Make Our Picks

Imagine someone who had read everything printed about your city for years, interviewed the thousands of people who know it best, and remembered who turned out to be right. Now imagine they did the same for the things you buy. That person would give you better answers than any search engine. That is who we are trying to be.

Every category gets exactly three picks. They come from two places: experts we interview, and our research into years of what has been said about the places in each city and the products worth owning.

Expert picks

We sit down with people who know a category from the inside: chefs, bartenders, trainers, builders, longtime local voices. We ask where they actually go, and share their picks.

Research picks

Google was built on a simple idea called PageRank: every link to a page was a vote, and votes from trusted pages counted for more. That is how search got good, before ads and noise displaced the quality results.

We cut the noise and count a different kind of vote: mentions. A critic recommending a restaurant, a chef naming their bakery, a readers' poll crowning a winner, a testing lab naming the best in its class. Most of these live offline, in print, newsletters, polls, local expert interviews and videos. Search engines never index most of it, and it's largely invisible to modern AI.

We read and track all of it, then ask one question of every mention:

Who is saying it, and how much should we trust them?

A critic with a long record counts for more than a single post. A reviewer who tests counts for more than one who rounds up. Sponsored or hosted content counts for next to nothing.

Every pick comes down to human voices and human judgment. Don't take our word for it. Open a category you know well and see if we got it right.
