Best Bagels

Nomad Donuts, located in North Park, is known primarily for its artisanal donuts, but its Montreal-style bagels have become something of a cult favorite in San Diego’s breakfast scene. Made fresh on site, these bagels lean crisp and slightly dense, with a chew that distinguishes them from the doughnut-centric offerings around. Against the backdrop of an artsy, food-forward neighborhood, the bagels serve as a savory counterpoint to the shop’s more playful sweet fare. It made our picks list due to its consistency and versatility. Reviewers note that even days-old bagels retain chew and flavor, which testifies to quality in the dough and bake. The bagels also work well in Nomad’s sandwich builds, pairing with smoked carrot “lox” or flavorful cream cheeses, making them a standout in a town where bagel shops are relatively scarce.

Mission Bagel is a Pacific Beach–area bagel shop and food-trailer operation that brings hand-made, New York–style bagels and schmears to San Diego’s breakfast scene. Situated in a neighborhood already lively with morning cafés, it stands out by offering chewy, taut-skinned bagels made in small batches and delivered fresh to the trailer counter. The result feels more artisanal than chain, with each round bearing irregularities that hint at its handmade care. It earned our recommendation for reliably balancing chew, crust, and flavor. Critics praise its restrained tang and textured bite, noting that even unadorned bagels remain compelling to the last chew. Its offerings include a rotating set of classics (sesame, poppy, “everything”) paired with schmears or lox, and its consistency under pressure (morning rushes) reinforces its status. If you aim to “eat it straight” - i.e. without toasting or heavy toppings - this is one of the few shops in San Diego where that works.

Big City Bagel Cafe, with its flagship in University Heights and multiple locations throughout the city, is a mainstay in San Diego’s breakfast scene. It blends the familiar comfort of a neighborhood deli with consistent bagel craftsmanship: each fresh bagel arrives with a gently crisp crust, pillowy interior, and a balanced rye-and-malt aroma that doesn’t overwhelm. It sits comfortably between “artisanal oddity” and “dependable local standby.” It was named to our picks list largely for reliability under pressure. Its steady performance across dozens of days, varied toppings, and daily rush hours keeps it in contention when other entrants wobble. Its “everything” variety is a go-to for regulars, and it delivers bagel fundamentals without drama.
