Best California Burritos

The Surfin’ California is Lucha Libre’s surf-and-turf riff on San Diego’s fry-stuffed classic, served at the Mission Hills flagship. It layers steak and shrimp with fresh fries, pico de gallo, jack cheese, avocado, and a house “secret” chipotle sauce. The playful lucha-themed setting adds personality, but this balanced build is the real draw. We put it on our picks list for contrast and proportion: crispy fries against juicy steak and shrimp, cool avocado and pico, and a smoky, creamy finish that ties every bite together. It’s a hearty order that satisfies without gimmicks and stands as a defining version of the style in this neighborhood.

Lolita’s 2-in-1 is a playful twist on San Diego’s burrito canon, served at the Kearny Mesa shop. It tucks two crisp rolled tacos inside a warm flour tortilla with carne asada, guacamole, and a trio of cheeses (cheddar, cotija, jack). The result is rich, crunchy, and unmistakably local. We put it on our picks list for texture and clarity of flavor: hot, juicy steak against shattering taquitos, cooled by guacamole and salty cheese. It travels well, eats big, and scratches the California-burrito itch without feeling sloppy. A reliable Convoy-area staple when you want crunch in every bite.

A La Jolla staple, The Taco Stand’s California burrito delivers the city’s favorite format with care: flame-grilled Angus steak, melted cheese, and a load of fries tucked in with guacamole, tomato, mild salsa, and sour cream. The setting is a tight, Tijuana-inspired taquería that helped put this corner of La Jolla on San Diego’s taco map. It earned a spot on our pick lists for balance and texture - beef with char, cooling guac, and fries that keep some crunch inside the fold. Consistency, fresh salsas, and made-to-order pace help it rise above a crowded field. Best move: order the California and add a little extra salsa from the bar to taste.
