Best Chicken Sandwich

Cross Street’s Convoy flagship turns out a Nashville-style hot chicken sandwich with Korean know-how. A crisp fried thigh is drenched in the house “Hot Chick” sauce and stacked with chipotle slaw, pickles, and cheese on a toasted brioche bun. It’s a Kearny Mesa staple and one of the city’s most reliable heat-meets-crunch bites. We put it on our picks list for clean texture and balance: juicy chicken, a fiery glaze, and cool, tangy slaw that keeps each bite sharp. It’s quick counter service, travels well, and pairs neatly with tots or fries. This is the order that sums up why Cross Street leads the Convoy fried-chicken scene.

The MC Sandwich is Main Chick’s signature order in Clairemont. A crisp Nashville-style fried chicken fillet sits under cool slaw and pickles on a soft bun. Heat runs from no spice to the fiery “supreme,” so you can tune the burn without losing the crunch or the juiciness. We put it on our picks list for balance and control: clean crunch, juicy meat, and a tangy slaw-and-pickle counterpoint. It pairs well with seasoned crinkle-cut fries and the house MC sauce. If you chase heat, step up the spice; if you don’t, mild still hits the mark. Clairemont is the original San Diego outpost.

The Firebird is the spicy fried chicken sandwich at The Crack Shack’s Little Italy flagship. A crisp, chile-spiked fried thigh meets cool ranch, crunchy onions, and pickles on a soft potato roll - simple, focused, and very satisfying. It’s the order that captures why this coop became a local staple. We put it on our picks list because it’s a proven crowd-pleaser and longtime menu best-seller, with heat, tang, and crunch in each bite. The build travels well, works for lunch or late afternoon, and pairs neatly with the house schmaltz fries. Counter service keeps it quick.
