The Cut List Deep Dive
Discovery is broken. We're building a better system.
The internet once made the best things easier to find. Then the incentives changed. Discovery shifted from merit to monetization, and trust collapsed with it. The Cut List exists to push in the other direction.
The problem
A handful of powerful platforms now shape what people see, while the internet is flooded with fake reviews, affiliate spam, pay-to-play rankings, self-serving influencers, and algorithmic noise. The result is simple: people have more options than ever, and less confidence in what to trust.
Free markets are among the greatest engines of human progress ever created, but they begin to crumble when monopoly power becomes too concentrated and information asymmetry runs rampant. Today, both are at extreme levels. A small number of platforms control discovery, while the information beneath them has been distorted by incentives that reward manipulation over truth. The old promise of the internet was better discovery. In too many categories, the opposite happened. Access is no longer the problem. Discovery is.
Why three
The Cut List is built on a constraint: every category gets exactly three picks.
That is not arbitrary. It reflects the three qualities that matter most when people make choices: value, quality, and innovation.
Sometimes one pick stands out because it delivers exceptional value. Another may represent the highest level of quality, even if it costs more. Another may earn its place because it pushes the category forward in a meaningful way. And sometimes a single pick does all three.
We are not trying to give you every option. We are trying to give you the right three.
A celebration of builders
The Cut List is a celebration of builders.
That starts with the taco shop owner, the bar owner, the surf shaper, the baker, and the independent operator quietly making something excellent. From there, it extends outward to the makers of standout products, tools, experiences, media, and technology.
By making great things easier to find, we help reward the people who create them. That encourages more excellence, and over time gives people more and better choices.
How the system improves
The Cut List is not a static list. It is a refining process.
We start by identifying three strong picks in each category using research, trusted sources, and input from people who know the space. From there, the work continues. Categories are revisited, challenged, updated, strengthened, and improved over time.
What improves is not the number of picks. That constraint remains. Every category still gets just three. What improves is the quality of the judgment behind them. As our team grows, our resources grow, and our access to knowledgeable practitioners and experts expands, the system gets better. What starts as a strong version one becomes a stronger version two, then version three.
The goal is not to pretend we begin with perfect truth. The goal is to build toward it, category by category, year by year.
Why this matters in the AI age
AI is only as good as the information beneath it.
In products, services, and local recommendations, much of that information is already corrupted by affiliate incentives, pay-to-play rankings, fake reviews, self-serving influencers, and algorithmic noise. AI does not fix that. It often repackages it with more confidence.
That is why better underlying information matters.
The Cut List is built to create more trustworthy reference points by grounding recommendations in research, credible sources, and input from practitioners who have nothing to gain from gaming the result. In a world where AI increasingly shapes what people see, that kind of ground truth becomes more important, not less.
We are not trying to generate more noise. We are trying to build a better layer of reality for both people and AI to work from.
How we make money
Just as important as what we do is what we do not do.
No affiliate commissions. No interruption-based ads. No pay-to-play placement.
We make money through advertising that enhances earned merit or appears clearly alongside it, never in place of it:
Enhanced listings for earned picks.
Every business or brand that makes the cut gets a basic listing for free. Inclusion is always editorially earned. They can then enhance that listing with richer content such as photography, video, expanded text, and links.
Exclusive category sponsorships.
Each category can have one exclusive sponsor, with first right of refusal on renewal. That sponsorship does not affect which three picks make the cut. It is reserved for a relevant business or brand in that category and gives them space to tell a broader story.
Promoted options.
These appear only after the three editorially chosen picks and are clearly labeled as promoted. They are not meant to be confused with what made the cut. They are limited to relevant businesses or brands that belong in the conversation.
Merit comes first. These products are designed to support the platform without distorting what makes the cut.
Anti-monopoly
Distributed ownership by design
The Cut List is not designed to become another extractive gatekeeper. It is designed to distribute value outward.
Everything tends toward monopoly online, so it is not just a little value capture we are talking about with these platforms. A 2023 study found that, on average, Amazon takes 50% of every third-party seller sale.
We want to build in the opposite direction. Exclusive category sponsorships are part of that design. With first right of refusal on renewal, businesses that support the platform early can hold valuable positions over time rather than being beholden to pay whatever platform monopoly tax the platform chooses.
More broadly, our aim is to create value for millions of businesses and let them create more value for consumers. We want the benefits of a connected world to flow outward to the people building real things and the buyers of those things, not just upward to a small number of platforms. By design, we do not cross the line from creating value to extracting it.
